Special FX

It’s a great way to start the weekend – Special FX – one hour of free performance from 6 – 7 pm on Fridays at the Royal Exchange.  The line up and genre changes weekly, with an interesting balance of comedy, music and spoken word, and a mix of established and upcoming talent.  Tonight there are two excellent musicians, including Chris Flynn.  To complete the billing, poet Tony Walsh aka Longfella.

I love Longfella’s poetry – I am the proud owner of his collection Sex & Love & Rock&Roll – and I’ve seen him perform a few times.  Two of the poems tonight struck a particular chord.  First how Manchester and music are intertwined; second why the Arts are vital to who we are, whatever the state of the economy.  To finish, the poem he wrote for the completion of the Manchester 10K last week: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/get-inspired/32681197

This really is a good way to start the weekend!
